GAS SCIENCE / HUMAN HISTORY / INTERNET NONSENSE

Facts & Culture.

The facts behind the fumes. Explore the science, the strange history, and the claims that do not pass the sniff test.

The actual science.

01 / THE BASICS

Where does it come from?

Two main routes: air swallowed while eating or drinking, and gas produced when bacteria in the large intestine break down carbohydrates. The punchline starts with digestion.

02 / FOOD

Beans have a reputation.

Some carbohydrates reach the large intestine without being fully digested. Bacteria break them down, producing gas. Different people respond differently to foods.

03 / TRIGGERS

Your menu, your mileage.

Beans, some fruits and vegetables, and fizzy drinks can contribute to gas. Lactose is another possibility for people who have trouble digesting it.

04 / EVERYDAY HABITS

Slow down the intake.

Eating slowly and reducing swallowed air may help. Notice your own patterns before cutting out whole food groups.

05 / THE SMALL PRINT

There is no universal fix.

Treatment depends on the cause. Diet changes and some medicines may help particular problems; an all-purpose “gas cure” is not a sensible promise.

06 / HEALTH

When the joke stops being funny.

Talk to a clinician if gas symptoms bother you, change suddenly, or come with other symptoms such as abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhoea or weight loss.

A very human obsession.

HISTORY / AT LEAST 1900 BC

We have always been like this.

Guinness identifies a Sumerian fart proverb as the oldest recorded joke, citing a 2008 study. Its definition required a setup and punchline. That makes this a claim about surviving recorded humour, rather than proof of the first joke anyone ever told.

PERFORMANCE / THE FLATULIST

Yes, it is a stage act.

A flatulist performs using controlled fart-like sounds. Guinness awarded British performer Mr Methane the longest-career title in 2025. Its history of the act also includes French entertainer Le Pétomane. Bad manners have had a surprisingly long show-business career.

INTERNET CULTURE / REALITY CHECK

The “fart walk” has left the chat.

The viral term describes a gentle walk after a meal. HMRI explains that post-meal movement has research behind it, especially for blood sugar, but evidence specifically for “fart walks” is limited. A catchy nickname is not proof of a cure.

Great story. Is it true?

MYTH CHECK / WORLD RECORDS

The longest fart record? Not so fast.

Guinness said in March 2026 that it does not monitor a longest-fart record. Treat viral durations attributed to Guinness with caution. A number repeated across the internet is not the same as a verified record.

MYTH CHECK / YOUR BODY

Gas is not automatically a problem.

Passing gas is a normal part of digestion. Symptoms and changes matter more than trying to beat an internet “normal” score.
